Tesco appeals over rejected Queensbury store bid

An appeal has been lodged against a decision to turn down planning permission for a new supermarket in Queensbury.

Tesco has lodged its objection to the refusal by Bradford Council over its plans for a 15,000 sq ft store off Brighouse Road in the village.

Permission was refused in December when councillors voted down the scheme at a meeting of Bradford Planning Panel.

But the supermarket giant has now appealed the decision to the Planning Inspectorate.

The principle of a food store on the site has already been established through previous planning permissions, but they have now lapsed.

Tesco says this would provide the first major investment in Queensbury in 30 years during which time the town has grown considerably and the need for a supermarket has significantly increased.

It also claims that more than 90 per cent of those attending a public meeting in 2008 wanted a new supermarket in the village.

Deborah Hayeems, of Tesco Corporate Affairs, said: “Tesco is committed to providing more shopping choice in Queensbury. We want to reduce the need for unnecessary car trips to Halifax or Bradford as well as providing for local shoppers who do not drive.

“A new store will also benefit local traders and the economy by keeping shoppers local and providing 200 new jobs for the area.”

In a report to the planning panel, members were recommended to grant approval for a supermarket with 153 car parking spaces. But councillors voted by six to one to refuse it.

They said it was because of the threat posed to the village’s shops, the unsuitability of the store in a conservation area and its proximity to the grade II listed Black Dyke Mills building.

There was significant opposition to the plans by residents and businesses, including 36 written objections as well as four petitions containing a total of 271 names.

"A new store will also benefit local traders..." How exactly? In just about all other similar areas where Tesco stores have been built, local shops are dying.

Also as soon as Tesco manage to get a foot in the door they'll be adding a whole additional range of products they say shoppers are demanding, until they completely monopolise all retail requirements in the area.
Tesco are not there to provide a charitable service to communities, they are there to make a fat profit at any expense.

We need a tesco in Queensbury i backing it 100%. I went to the meeting in queensbury to look at the plans i thought they were good and will bring over 100 full time jobs to Bradford also.
It the busy bodys of Queensbury who tryed to put a stop to this store going ahead because there shops will lose money like the CO OP.
The local BNP councillors were also at the metting and backing it also Paul and linda.
Tesco have now down size the store to get planning permission i can not see what else can tesco can do now to please everyone.

Judging by the poor spelling, terrible grammar and infantile punctuation, I suppose above will be applying for jobs at the new store. No doubt they will relish the thought of joining the massed ranks of knuckle scrapers, OAP’s and hapless teenagers that usually populate these stores. Only a moron would state the BNP supporting the development as a plus point. I presume they will be hoping for the first Tesco staffed only by whites. Until, of course, they run out of White Lightning at 2 am!

we have less shops/choice now than we had twenty years ago !
queensbury is a big place now, lets have some decent facilities.
**** the councillors, get the place built.
if it wasnt for barbers shops and takeaway's the high street would a complete waste of space.

The building of a Tesco on the derelict car park can only be good for the village.

There are some concerns about congestion and the loss of some mature trees on the site but in this case the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages.

The new plans are far better than the original idea to locate a far larger store at a site on the opposite side of the road.

I am backing this and suspect most of the residents of the village will also do the same.

Let us hope the Council Planning Committee see some sense this time.

I was initially against this due to the fact of congestion and also because Tesco has stores in Great Horton & Buttershaw.
However I changed my mind partly because of the ageing population in Q'bury and the fact they are being shafted by the CO-Op.
The argument of businesses closing just doesn't wash in Queensbury. Like another poster says it is full of Takeaways & Barbers shops, not sure the last time I went in Tesco for a haircut or a tanning session come to think about it.

I'm no lover of Tesco, i think they have got too big but Queensbury is dead on its feet, the land is an eyesore and whoever creates 200 jobs in this climate is welcome in my opinion. Tesco also plans to invest £90k in the village.

As I say my only concern now is the traffic which they HAVE to sort out without narrowing Brighouse road. They will have to install traffic lights too which is not welcome when traffic already backs up to the lights at the Stags head.

Why not mention the Councillors, they are elected representatives after all. With their wealth they could probably afford to build their own store, jealous or what?

I doubt it.
