A pals’ Christmas walk to get the children from under their wives’ feet is in its 22nd year – now minus the youngsters, but open to all.

Terry McNamara, now 65, from Wilsden, and his friend Bob Brown, from Leeds, started their walks in 1986, with their children in tow.

But when their offspring – Terry’s two girls and Bob’s daughter – got fed up, the two men went alone and have been tackling Pen-y-ghent ever since.

Anyone who wants to join Terry and Bob for this year’s walk, on Saturday, should meet in Horton-in Ribblesdale car park at 9.30am. Walkers will return to the cafe for a snack after the trek.

“It is never the same – there have been times when you can’t see the walls for the snow and at others it’s like a spring day,” said Terry.
