When he found a postcard among some of his mother’s memorabilia, Jack Hogg was transported back to the 1930s.

“It brought back memories of my school life, even to my handkerchief safety-pinned to my jersey (well, it was a square torn off a bedsheet, but it was still spotless).

“My early days were not easy as I was preceded by my brother, four years older, and what a nice clean boy he was, and there was me with sweaty hands. Though I passed my scholarship (11-plus later) I couldn’t go to grammar school so my further education was a hard slog at night school.

“The reason for this screed is to enlighten everyone to the dedication teachers gave to outside events other than normal teaching activities and outside normal school hours.

“This postcard relates back to 1935 and Wibsey Modern School. Tom Swan and others, including two teachers from Carlton High (the Atkinson brothers), took about 20 of us to Scar Top at Hebden: service bus to Skipton, then Hargreaves bus to beyond Hebden and across the moors to our abode near to the then ‘Falling Rock’.

“It was a fantastic week, swimming in the Wharfe at Hebden Gill and Lang Dubb, climbing Great Whernside, into Grassington, etc, but not much spending money, as the card shows.

“The cost for everything, including travel, was initially £30 but it didn’t come to that and my parents got £7 back.

“And don’t forget that the teachers gave up a week of their holidays to give us kids a bit of pleasure. I am sure we appreciated it.”
