Young star is set to shine

Celebrity choirboy Andrew Johnston will take centre stage at Bradford’s first City Carol Service in modern times.

The 13-year-old, who shot to fame on ITV1’s Britain’s Got Talent, will make a guest appearance at the service.

Andrew has released his debut album One Voice, having landed a record deal with Simon Cowell.

The event at Bradford Cathedral starts with refreshments and mince pies from 5pm on Monday, December 15.

Cathedral representatives and Bradford Council are now working together to see if the service, which takes place between 5.30pm and 6.30pm, can be beamed live on to the big screen in Centenary Square.

Sandra Howard, publicity and projects officer for the Cathedral, said: “The Council want to put the City Carol Service onto the big screen, so we are busy working on that at the moment.”

She said a large gathering was expected for the event, which will also see a performance from the Bradford Cathedral Choir.

The Very Reverend Dr David Ison, Dean of Bradford Cathedral, said: “The timing of the event is intended to make it possible for people to come along at the end of the working day and still get home in time for supper. A celebrity choirboy, a Bishop, carols and a choir, well-known words and lovely music and the people of Bradford – the recipe for a lovely evening.”

A post-Christmas service used to be held for the city’s business community, but that event has not taken place for at least five years.

Although plans for the City Carol Service are progressing, another event has had to be cancelled.

Mrs Howard said: “Regrettably the Footballers Carol Concert scheduled at Bradford Cathedral on Monday has had to be cancelled due to Bradford City’s commitments.

“With the large number of other services being held at the Cathedral it was impossible to reschedule.”
