'Think again over Odeon'

The Theatres Trust has waded into the debate over Bradford’s former Odeon cinema by lodging an official objection to plans for the building’s demolition.

But the Trust admitted it was “unlikely” that the 1930s building could return to use as a theatre or cinema because Bradford is already well served by the Alhambra, St George’s Hall, the Playhouse (formerly the Priestley) and National Media Museum.

In its response to Bradford Council’s consultation, the Trust urged the Council to ensure that the building is surplus to cultural and community requirements before considering demolition. It argued that the former Odeon building would support educational projects, conferences, exhibitions and community events, as well as provide a valuable social meeting place.

The Council is accepting feedback on the £55 million New Victoria Place proposal, a scheme put forward by Langtree Artisan and Yorkshire Forward that would see the creation of the city’s first Grade A offices, apartments and a new hotel.

Mike Price, planning and architecture advisor for the Trust, said: “The Trust objects to the application for the demolition on the basis that a potentially valuable cultural facility will be lost and is capable of being repaired as part of any regeneration scheme.

“The benefits of incorporating the Odeon into the possible regeneration of the area with a community or cultural use would in the long term be more beneficial as its focus for the cultural quarter.”

Mr Price said the replacement would harm the Conservation Area because of its adverse size, scale and bulk.

The objection comes hot on the heels of a response from English Heritage, which urged refusal.

Meanwhile, the Council has cleared up confusion over the length of the consultation after claims the deadline was unclear.

A Council spokesman said: “The 21-day notice period is the minimum time for consultation on planning applications which all local authorities have to adhere to. Comments received after this period will still be acknowledged right up to the date when the application is considered by the Regulatory and Appeals Committee.”

Hopkins is put on the spot

The former Odeon will be a hot topic of conversation today at a full meeting of Bradford Council when a councillor tables a series of questions about the building.

Councillor David Ward, deputy leader of the Liberal Democrat group, is set to put questions to the leader of Bradford Council, Councillor Kris Hopkins.

Coun Ward will demand that the Council fulfils its commitment for everyone to have a say on the plans in view of what he described as “the current unreliability” of the Council’s Access to Planning system, which has been rejecting online representations. He will also ask Coun Hopkins to comment on the Arcadis consultants’ report, which he said put the cost of reinstating the building to a sound structure at £1,055,000.

He will ask if the Bradford Odeon Rescue Group will be allowed to address the Council’s Regulatory and Appeal Committee. Coun Ward said: “I hope to get some answers.”

At last, another recognised body puts weight behind the argument of retaining the Odeon in some part at least, it seems BORG's campaigning for the past few years has not been in vain, well done to all involved.

Bradford Council and Langtree MUST listen now and review their plans, forget the spin on polls done where they show favor to the New Victoria development, as it is now becoming clear that these were paper thin figures show nothing of the public's true opinion.

Keep the towers AT LEAST, perhaps add to them as BORG have suggested, and build a development that will complement the Alhambra, the City Hall, and the suggested Park in the Heart.

To Bradford Council: If you'd have listened to peoples objections and suggestions four years ago you might have had a building there, developed and in use by the Bradford public and beyond, with you taking the plaudits, how different (or same) things seem to be?

That's what BORG have offered to do neverthetwain, it's not done badly really, 80 years old and still standing, will the Gallagher Leisure development do the same, in fact will many of the the buildings in Dubai still look good in 80 years, I doubt it.

Well spoken. Its a shame that this backing did not happen a few years ago.

Thanks Fed Up, shall I take my bow now or wait for more criticism!!

All I'm saying is the council MUST listen to the negative opinions of the public about pulling the building down totally, I believe parts of it (when curry coloured tiles are removed!!) will enhance the area surrounding. I saw a building similar in design and size in Leicester last week, in use, fitting in with it's environment and in fairness not totally redeveloped, it CAN work, I only look through the books of old Bradford to see the magnificent buildings that have been pulled down to make way for characterless replacements, I feel the New Victoria project is EXACTLY that. If the Odeon building holds so few memories for people, there would be no objection to flattening it.

When you look at the picture and see the towers and the Alhambra dome together it makes you wonder who on earth would want to see them replaced by the proposed glass house

EXACTLY Fed Up, I thought the same. Bradford has a proud history, lets retain it, bring it with us into the future by using it for a positive purpose, it's not too much to ask, afterall apparently the current building only needs £1m to bring it up to scratch and BORG's redevelopment plans would cost nothing like the £55m planned for New Victoria, it all makes so much sense.

...Bradford Council could always spent £55m, build New Victoria Place, and THEN we could fit them all in....!?!

Isn't this what Manchester did with immense success with Aphlex Palace which has its own cultural identity now & is THE place to be for all the arty types?

Incidentally: A Council spokesman said: “The 21-day notice period is the minimum time for consultation on planning applications which all local authorities have to adhere to. And THAT'S cleared it up?

"Built on the cheap"??? Your ignorance has done you no favours... The next time you choose to come out with more clap-trap, get your facts straight.

When the New Victoria/Gaumont/Ode
on was constructed in 1929 as the largest Provincial Cinematograph Theatres project in the UK, it was done so at the reported cost of a quarter of a million pounds.

What would that not-so-modest sum from 80 years ago equate to nowadays?

If Langtree get permission to demolish the Odeon, they will need £55m up front to build New Victoria Place because it was said to be a speculative development with no cost to the public purse. Before any decisions are made should we not ask to see the colour of their money?
