'Detained pupils are innocent victims'

The headteacher of four young Bradford schoolchildren being removed from the UK with their illegal immigrant parents says they are innocent victims.

Lloyd Mason-Edwards, head of Peel Park Primary, has written to immigration authorities about his concerns and has met officials from the office of Bradford North Labour MP Terry Rooney.

Twins Ziyad and Bahidja Zighem, six, their sister Rahima, four, and three-year-old brother Hani, are being held, along with two-year-old brother Zinedine, and their mother Lazazi Akila, 31, at an immigration removal centre. Their father, Mestah Zighem, 42, is being detained at a separate centre as the family awaits removal back to Algeria.

Mr Mason-Edwards said he had received a call from the father, who had worked at the school as a security guard for several months, on October 20, saying they had been taken from their beds at 6am, put in a car and driven to an immigration centre.

Mr Mason-Edwards said: “My concern is for the children. They are the innocent victims.

“They have been held in captivity for 33 days and I am concerned about their physical and mental welfare.

“Their classmates are missing them. They are bright, lovely and engaging children who would make fantastic British citizens. They have done nothing wrong.”

He added: “The Government says that every child matters. But it seems these children don’t matter, even though they were born and brought up in the UK.”

In his letter to the authorities Mr Mason-Edwards said the older children had developed academically and socially extremely well and a great deal of resources had been invested in educating and making them feel part of the community. They had developed strong bonds with teachers and the other children.

In correspondence with Mr Zighem’s solicitors, the UK Border Agency said he was an “overstayer”, having failed to leave the UK after the expiry of a six-month family reunion visa granted in 2000. It said an asylum and human rights claim by his wife was refused in January 2004, as was an appeal three months later.

A spokesman for the Agency said: “We only seek to remove families who are in the UK unlawfully after independent courts have agreed they have no further right to remain in the UK.

“We would much rather that failed asylum seekers accepted that fact and left voluntarily.”

Are they law abiding? Are they likely to put money back in to the system if kept in the UK? From what Lloyd Mason-Edwards is saying about these children the answer is YES, eventually they will get jobs and as he puts it be fantastic Citizens. The UK seems intent on letting the worst types in and kicking the better candidates out. Why? Because they are easy targets who don't hide. It's easy pickings and makes the government look like they are doing something worthwhile for when the figure crunching, statistic counting bureaucrats stand up and count themselves.

I have a suggestion which I'm sure the majority of the UK people would agree with. THREE STRIKES and you are out, out of the country, back to where you started. Get rid of the garbage that is out there committing crime, driving about in flash cars and living in nice houses without legitimate income. Keep the people in the UK who will make Britain great again.

I'm well out of it and will stay out of it as I'm one of the lucky ones who had an opportunity to get out. It does though still annoy when you read these ridiculous reports.

GIVE 'EM A CHANCE. Hands up if you agree?

"GIVE 'EM A CHANCE. Hands up if you agree?"

No! They have no right to be here.If we don't deal with these effectively how many more would be tempted to come here illegally.
The teacher should look at the wider picture and understand the implications. He seems a bit of a wet!

From reading this it appears the teacher is blaming the government, the fact is if the parents are illegal immigrants they have to go, no matter what he says nobody should be above the law.

the children are british by birth !

the parents were not in hiding they came here and were allowed to stay here by the immigration till there case was decided on . it took immigration long enough to sort their case out and in that time the couple had children - so the children are British by birth.

If they cut out all the appeals immigration wouldnt take so long to decide. They have probably already cost us a fortune in legal aid and benefits.

I agree that they should stay. Yes the children have a born right to live here, but I also agree it is the fault of people in power who lets people in and then doesn't follow through with the rules. If the laws of this Country were upheld by the people who make them, we wouldn't need to have this discussion.

You are not very intelligent are you?Just read your quote, you have made a total arse of yourself.I hope you are totally embarrased SADDO!!!!!!!

You could possibly argue these people knew fully well they were illegal immigrants. Not saying this is definately the case here, but could they think by having kids it could be a chance of staying permanentley? Using them as a sympathy card.

We probably shouldn't separate the families. But the parents KNEW fully well they shouldn't be here. They were breaking the law. It's like when lawyers use kids as an reason to get people off. Tough. Should have thought about that before.

mBefore you think I'm a BNP supporting racist, my dad was an immigrant to this country. And has worked a good job ever since. The article makes no reference to it, but I do wonder what occupation and contributions the parents have made over the years.

We've already seen stories of teenage mothers using children as an excuse to get a house and benefits, so why should my idea be that much different?

Thank you

I just think that anyone who puts in to the system should stay.... get fully rid of those that do not. I'm not even saying it matters if you were or weren't born in the UK. If you are British from British family of course the UK is home regardless. If you are not from a British background, & you commit crime and don't pay your way.... you should be forced to leave.

Reading this report, it suggests these children come from a decent family, they would not be held in such regard if not. So let them stay. If they then go on to fall short of what being British is about, then kick 'em out, but until then give them residency with conditions to support themselves. Like I said, get rid of the ones who are not of British background who are causing the problems and costing millions. Sod this political correctness garbage, nobody daring to speak their minds for fear of being arrested for inciting racial hatred. It's not a race issue, it's a financial issue.

Anyone reading this who knows the parents? Are they able to support themselves? Are they law abiding decent people?

So my post was cut. May I ask why? I don't believe likening this situation to a T&A story from earlier this week warranted it being pulled.

Haha, mmmmmm cynic maybe :-)

However I don't think the head would struggle to find more pupils to fill the gaps.

It appears that a very significant point is being missed - Mr.Mason Edwards should be brought to account as to why the father had been allowed to work at the school. It would appear that an illegal immigrant has been employed , therefore no background checks have been carried out on him and yet he is allowed to work at a school. It seems that there is serious cause for concern.

Yeh but more significantly as a security guard at a primary school he's not likely to need the standard checks for working in a school. This being due to not actually being there when the children are..... unless of course Bradford Primary Schools are now having security on the premises during school hours !!!! ????

Perhaps too much to ask. It appears that the ability to write & speak English disappears with the sense of fairness & equality.

Point taken - a bit too flippant & I apologise to Joanne. I cannot however tolerate such ill-informed views. It is small wonder that these is unrest &suspicion in our community.

Ah Dr Evil, you really ought to check your spelling before correcting Joanne.'it is small wonder that these is unrest'. 'there' was the correct spelling. No matter, back to the story....The family are here illegally, they know the risks involved. They should accept the consequences. Similarly, other illegal visitors should be dealt with appropriately, rather than when they have been discovered, asking them to report to a police station a week later, only to find, they don't!
