Police hunt pupils over runaway bus

A police hunt is on to find the pupils who let off the handbrake of a broken-down school bus which rolled down a hill, demolishing a garden wall.

The incident happened when the driver had to leave the bus transporting pupils home from Nab Wood School, Cottingley, to find a telephone box to report the break-down.

Bosses at bus company First and police are examining CCTV footage from the vehicle to try to identify the culprits. Khadim Hussain, operations director at First in Bradford, said it was fortunate no-one was in front of or behind the bus when it rolled down Bingley Road, Cottingley.

A wall was crushed when it came to rest in the garden of a house.

Mr Hussain said: “Luckily no-one was hurt, they could have been run over. In Bradford we operate approximately 60 school journeys on a daily basis without incident.

“This is a very rare occurrence but one we are taking very seriously as safety of our passengers is the number one priority for me and my staff.”

He warned once the culprits were tracked down they would face possible criminal damage charges.

As well as examining the footage taken from concealed cameras as small as the nib of a pen on the bus, the driver is helping out with the investigation.

First is also reviewing procedures to try to ensure this type of incident does not happen again, said Mr Hussain.

Kevin Beach, deputy head teacher at Nab Wood School, confirmed the school was working closely with the police and First to bring the matter to a conclusion.

He said: “The school takes such matters very seriously. We are investigating thoroughly and we will take robust action in line with normal school procedures.

“As this matter is being dealt with by the police it would be inappropriate to comment further.

Anyone with information about the incident at 4.20pm on Wednesday should contact Police on 0845 60 60 606.

"possible criminal damage charges"

So that means not a lot, particularly as they're probably under 16.

Yet again, they do it because there is no discipline through school or at home and there is no punishment anyway.

What on earth is a bus driver doing leaving an unattended broken-down bus full of school kids?

Why aren't the buses fitted with radios, or drivers provided with a mobile phone?

Maybe First think that handing out a 10p piece to drivers will be sufficient emergency cover?

I know this driver and he has been disaplined because of this, his radio was not working on the bus, company fault also. What was he supposed to do just sit in middle of the road with a bus full of kids until someone came to his aid? fault firstbus and pupils!! not driver

Er how about asking one of the kids for their phone to call in ?
Then again I can imagine the response !!
Did he not check his radio before he left ? Surely a routine bus safety check would be in place to prevent such a thing or do they just get in and go ? Was their a driver who had used it before him ?
A bit more in depth investigation and a few more questions reporter please !!

Of course the fault lies at the door of First!
What would have happened if there had been a serious medical emergency on the bus? The driver has to go trotting off looking for an ever more scarce public phone box?
Surely it's even more important with a bus full of kids that the driver has the support and security of working communications.

The fault is with whoever released the brake.

Bingley Road, Cottingley - Out in the back of beyond - NOT. Were there no other buses travelling up or down that road, that the driver could have signalled to? How long would he have had to wait for another bus to come along? Signs in First buses state that the driver should NEVER leave the bus unattended.
