Workers get to root of Odeon weeds

Workmen remove debris and plants from the Odeon building Workmen remove debris and plants from the Odeon building

A programme to improve the look of the former Odeon cinema building in Bradford city centre has started to remove weeds growing on the derelict building.

Contractors began the work yesterday on behalf of the building’s owner Yorkshire Forward.

Since buying the building in 2003, Yorkshire Forward has spent more than £60,000 on maintenance work, including weed-killing and health and safety measures.

A Yorkshire Forward spokesman said: “The clearance of the weeds from the Odeon building is part of the on-going maintenance and security of the site.

“Such work has been carried out on a number of occasions in the past and do not affect the current plans for the building.”

A planning application to demolish the existing building and replace it with a £55 million mixed-use development has now been submitted to the Council.

The New Victoria Place scheme would see the creation of the city’s first A-grade offices, apartments, bars, restaurants and cafes, around a public square.

Why tidy it up if you intend to demolish it, or have they seen sense at last?

A 'Your questions answered' article appeared few days ago, its link was in the editor's choice subsection -it wasn't featured in the main news bit, even though the removal of weeds is obviously newsworthy enough to warrant a slot..

It was basically a list of questions regarding the issues around the Odeon, which were answered by the planners, developers and a representative of Yorkshire Forward.
Buried in the waffle was a discreet implication that demolition wouldn't start until 2010 and that building would commence when the economic climate recovers....

Maybe I got the wrong idea. I'll try to find the article and post a link. You may not have seen it. It really quite annoyed me.

Has anybody really got any confidence in BCR/yorkshire forward to leave us with anything other than a piece of weed strewn land?
We have some tough times ahead and the council should be trimming its budget by starting with maud marshall and co and leave the odeon to a group who have Bradfords best interests at heart and an altogether more workable and impressive scheme for the restoration of the odeon in BORG!

£12,000 per year on maintenance work doesn't seem like very much for a building of that size. It appears that looking after the Odeon hasn't been very high on Yorkshire Forward's priority list.
Interesting how it's subtly referred to as a 'derelict building' in the opening paragraph.

Actually Editors Choice doesn't seeem to have any history, so type 'Odeon' into search.

It's the second story. I commented at length. (Not that it will make any difference to the outcome - I don't believe that Bradford local opinion has had the least influence on any of these decisions. Even the people that agree with the demolition seem to despise the replacement building. Yet we're supposed to 'get behind them and their plans'?

(They need someone to get behind them with a bull-whip, or at the very least a jelly catapult imo...)

Fixing the broken drain pipes that are causing damage internaly and could be helping these weeds and green growth are they being fixed?
If not being fixed could suggest Yorkshire Forward want further damage to occur.
Why no up to date pictures taken by you at the T&A of these pipes?

If you look into the link on the main page of the T&A under Tenders and Contracts you will see that planning permission has been submitted the Bradford Council for demolition of the Odeon to be replaced with 172 residential appartments and shops and an underground carpark, all this hype on making it look better is just to stop the "do gooders" retaliating for a while until the plan gets authorised.

So from the commenets above we can assume that the building will be demolished (another gaping hole of an eyesore in the city centre ) and that eventually 172 apartments will be build (and who in their right mind would ant to live in them?) and yet only 2 weeks ago the T and A reported on how hundreds of people thought the scheme was 'exciting and transformational'. £50 to the charity of Editors choice if he can get the Chief Exec of Brdford Council to commit now to living in one of these apartments in the City Centre when they are built....
