Many thanks to readers for their memories of the market monkey, as featured in Remember When? on October 2.
Andrea Clarke sent along a photograph of her son and daughter, Dean and Joanne Clarke, holding a monkey outside the old Kirkgate Market in about 1973 or 74. She says: “My son and daughter are now 41 and 39.”
The other photograph was e-mailed by Colin Illingworth, who writes: “I remember the monkey well from the cafes. "Also, the monkey and owner used to stand at the foot of the steps leading to the old Kirkgate Market, which was where this picture of me was taken. I was around three years old at the time, but still remember it to this day.”
