A threatened bus stop could be saved after transport bosses pledged to address safety issues.

More than 30 residents signed a petition to keep the stop in Halifax Road, Cullingworth, after Keighley & District Travel said drivers would no longer use it from September 1 as it was unsafe to park at.

Bradford Council highways chiefs are now looking at extending the pavement at the stop to make it safer after meetings were held with local councillors and the West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority. And the bus company has said it will continue to use the stop until the issue is resolved.

John Coultous, chairman of Culling-worth Parish Council, said: “We heard there was the possibility of the bus stop being taken away and we received a petition from residents to keep it. Quite a lot of people use the stop to call at the chemist or post office. It would be quite a walk uphill from the nearest bus stop.

“We want to retain the bus stop so we have to lose a parking space – we have to accept that. It is a small price to pay.”

Bradford councillor Mike Ellis (Con, Bingley Rural) said the safety issue for bus drivers had flagged up the need to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act.

He said: “I am happy with the outcome. The options included creating a yellow box section or getting rid of the stop altogether, which were not preferable. We have got to understand what our responsibilities are towards people with disabilities.”

A spokesman for Metro, the operating arm of the passenger transport authority, said: “A couple of options were discussed for the stop and obviously Metro will be fully supportive of any measures to retain the bus stop. The options will be worked up and proposals given to ward and parish councillors for approval and hopefully a satisfactory solution will come out of it.”

Simon D’Vali, the Council’s principal engineer for highways in Shipley, said: “We met ward members, parish council members and Metro to look at a proposal to address the safety issue when getting on and off a bus at this location.

“After studying all the options available the best way forward is to extend the pavement at the existing bus stop which will take up approximately one car park space.”
