ORPINGTON: Grandmother falls victim to thieves in season of goodwill as Lights of love stolen

A GRIEVING granny whose husband died of cancer was distraught to find his memorial lights stolen from outside her house.

Nurse Heather Fiander, 54, from Orpington, bought a rope light, which she put up outside her house, to remind her of her husband who loved Christmas.

But after turning away two teenage carol singers, who she was afraid to open the door to, her festive lights were stolen from around her window.

She said: "I put the lights up to cheer up the area and as a reminder of my husband who loved Christmas lights.

But one night two teenagers turned up on scooters wearing hats and dark clothing claiming to be carol singer's. They didn't even sing anything, they just stood there.

I turned them away because I live on my own and don't like opening my door to strangers at night.

I thought this was the season of goodwill. I'd like to know what their parents think of them.

I hope someone treats them the way they have treated me some day so they can see how it feels.

Mrs Fiander has been on leave from Queen Mary's Hospital since her husband died in April 2000.

The couple were two months from their 30th anniversary when landscape gardener David, 59, was struck down by cancer.

I am still getting over his death and living every day as it comes. This is a real blow to me.

However it is not all bad news for the widower who had a second granddaughter on December 19 and is expecting her third grandchild any day.

She said: I hope it is a boy. David would have liked that as he would like for his name to live on.
