Transport chiefs at Bradford Council have submitted a new, scaled-down, £10 million scheme to ease congestion between Bradford and the Aire Valley.

The initial £20 million project to implement the Connecting Airedale transport plan was recommended for refusal by consultants for the Regional Transport Board after advisers said the 2014 deadline was unrealistic.

The plan included revamping Saltaire roundabout, improvements to Canal Road, a new railway station at Manningham and a Shipley Eastern Link Road. It was expected to cost £100m.

The revised plan focuses on the Saltaire roundabout, seen by the Council as an “immediate priority”, and is based on the original package of measures in the Connecting Airedale project.

The Yorkshire Regional Transport Board meets next month when members will consider all the bids made by authorities across the region.

Bradford Councillor Anne Hawkesworth, who is a member of the Regional Transport Board, said she hoped for a “positive response” from her colleagues on the board to the plans.

The latest proposals still include converting traffic-choked Saltaire Roundabout to a junction with traffic lights but the amended plans will include extra crossings for pedestrians and cyclists.

Other measures include: - some reorganisation of traffic flow through Fox Corner and new crossings for pedestrians - improvements to pedestrian access to Shipley Station - new signs and lighting at Frizinghall, Baildon and Saltaire stations - buses will be given more priority over other vehicles in the Airedale Corridor - highway improvements to encourage use of the Canal Road and Valley Road corridor, with Manningham Lane and Keighley Road being the main bus route - local traffic management improvements in Nab Wood, Saltaire and Moorhead.

Joe Grint, a senior highways manager for Bradford Council, said: “Support from the board will allow the authority to develop the measures under consideration in more detail.

“They will be brought forward for public consultation once the Council’s executive has been advised of the result of the bid in September.”

The Council will be submitting further measures for the Connecting Airedale project to the Regional Transport Board for consideration next year.

This will include improvements to Canal Road and Valley Road, the Shipley Eastern Link Road, a new rail station at Manningham and more bus priority zones.

Coun Hawkesworth said: “A positive response from the Regional Transport Board will allow further development of measures to address the difficulties encountered by all road and public transport users in the Shipley and Saltaire areas.”
