City set to miss out on Thompson

City look like being beaten in the race to sign their top transfer target - Garry Thompson.

The Morecambe winger has been in talks with Stuart McCall but seems certain to now turn the Bantams down.

League One outfit Scunthorpe are thought to have seen off a host of other clubs to nail the in-demand wideman.

Iron boss Nigel Adkins refused to confirm a deal had been done for the 27-year-old, who is available on a free transfer.

But he said: "I am looking to bring in a right winger who is dynamic and who can provide service into the box.

"He is on a Bosman' and there are several other clubs who have offered him a contract.

"He has come back to us though via his agent and said he wants to sign for us."

McCall, meanwhile, won't be bullied into bringing the wrong type of players to Valley Parade.

Agents are knocking down his door offering deals but he insists City must hold out for quality, even if it means they miss out on chosen targets.

That appears to have been the case with Thompson.

"I've been encouraged with the talks we've had but teams from higher divisions can always come in and scupper us," McCall said.

"I could have signed a dozen players by now but they wouldn't be the right ones.

"We've had a couple of discussions with a couple more but nothing is going to happen in the short term.

"The better players have options so we have to wait and see."
