Specialist Architectural Liaison Officers are helping police design out crime in Bradford.

PCs Paul Corah and Dan Messenger are working with town planners, developers and architects to make sure new buildings are designed to reduce the opportunities for crime.

The officers are based in Bradford Council's planning department so they are on hand to offer crime prevention and community safety advice to planners.

The ALOs examine natural surveillance, lighting, security, landscaping and management practices, and in the last 15 months they have advised on almost 13,500 houses, as well as being heavily involved in the Building Schools for the Future programme and the Primary Care Trusts.

PC Corah said: "Without our intervention many developers would continue to build vulnerable developments that would result in significant levels of crime and anti-social behaviour.

"Our job is to prevent this and improve the quality of life for communities, reducing the demands on the police for decades to come."
