Festival will be a sign of the times

Young deaf people are to experience film-making at the first festival of its kind in Yorks-hire today.

Bradford's National Media Museum is hosting the two-day festival which will be conducted entirely in British Sign Language.

With the theme Young, Deaf and Proud, the event aims to show that being deaf is no barrier to budding filmmakers.

It involves workshops in different aspects of film-making including script writing, lighting, camera work and editing.

Later this year, participants will turn their hands to making their own short film which will be showcased at next year's festival.

Deaf filmmaker Ranjit Singh, of Deafinitions Ltd, organised the event. He said: "I wanted to provide young deaf people with an opportunity to understand how short films are made.

"The Yorkshire signFilm Festival's main aim is to be enjoyable and educate deaf youths so their interest and enthusiasm about the visual media can be developed to become a potential career."
