Knifeman jailed for two years

A self-styled vigilante who slashed at a man's face with a knife after bursting into his home has been locked up for two and a half years.

A judge branded Robert McKay a danger to anyone he took a dislike to.

McKay, 47, of New Cross Street, Little Horton, Bradford, pleaded guilty to assault and affray on July 29 last year.

Prosecutor Paul Nicholson told Bradford Crown Court yesterday McKay went to Derek Underwood's flat in Holme Top Lane armed with a knife.

He walked uninvited into the property at 8.30am after Mr Underwood rang the police about his behaviour the day before.

A witness saw the knife up McKay's sleeve as he shouted: "Who rang the police?"

When Mr Underwood said it was him, McKay slashed his cheek causing a five-inch scratch.

He warned another man: "If you don't get out now, I'll stab you."

McKay told police he could not recall the incident. He said he suffered from blackouts.

His barrister, Alan Bridger, said McKay had now moved to Batley to escape a pattern of heavy drinking. He had suffered four heart attacks and was waiting for a heart bypass operation.

Judge Roger Scott said McKay had a bad record for violence, including having served an eight-year jail sentence for wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

McKay was sentenced to an extended licence period and warned he might have to serve the whole of his jail term.
