A Bradford man attacked and threatened after his family converted from Islam to Christianity was told by police to "stop being a crusader", a report revealed today.

Nissar Hussein, 43, claims an officer made the comment after he reported a threat to burn down his house if he did not repent and return to Islam.

The claims are made in a new report by Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) into the abuses suffered by apostates - those who convert from Islam to another religion.

West Yorkshire Police said they had worked with Mr Hussein to resolve the issues, including installing security equipment, providing advice and making arrests.

The No Place To Call Home report, by Ziya Meral, states apostates are "subject to gross and wide-ranging human rights abuses." Mr Meral interviewed 28 apostates, including Mr Hussein, who converted to Christianity with wife Qubra in 1996.

The report, launched today, describes how the Pakistani community in Bradford reacted to the family's conversion by shouting abuse and death threats, vandalising their house and car, attacking Mr Hussein and following his wife.

In October 2001, a young man threatened to burn down their house if Mr Hussein did not repent and return to Islam, the report claims.

Mr Hussein told CSW he reported this to police but was told such threats are rarely carried out and to "stop being a crusader and move".

A few days later, the couple and their five children, all aged under 10, were woken in the the night to find an unoccupied house next door on fire.

The attacks continued until July 2006, when they moved to another part of the city.

A police spokesman said: "Since August 18, 2001, we have investigated 11 crimes in which Mr Hussein was the complainant. Of those, five have been classed as hate crimes.

"We are satisfied we are doing everything that we can in respect of this matter."

Rashid Awan, President of the Pakistan Association of West Yorkshire, said: "I strongly condemn a community penalising a man because he has converted. If he wants to change religion, that's his choice. Islam is a religion of peace and tolerance."

Jim Dutt, the Bradford-based chairman of the Pakistan Asian Christian Association, said: "We have faced these problems in Pakistan for a while, but they are becoming more regular over here too."

Sher Azam, of Bradford Council for Mosques, said: "Islam teaches us respect, tolerance and understanding and we would urge all the people to live in peace together despite differences in race, religion or culture."

I have no time for the organised religions of the world, they are in my opinion the major cause of conflict and division in the world for many hundreds of years, with that in mind, in my opinion all of the people featured in this article are gullible fools, but at least he is prepared to follow a path he has discovered for himself and not something heaped upon him since birth.
Having stated my opinion, i still have to accept that anyone has the right to follow any religion they choose to, and have the right not to have followers of other religions harrass them (nor indeed should they harrass others).
If these reports are correct, then the police response in all of this is disgraceful, but not unexpected.

I certainly agree that the organised religions are a threat to the world, encouraging as they do most of the worlds conflicts in history. It is true though that the real and silent religious majority are lost behind the radicals from all faiths that stir up hatred for its own sake. Personally I am a non-believer, but I would defend the right of anyone to have their own beliefs just so long as they remain personal to them whilst respecting mine and others positions.

some of these comments have made me angry.just because some muslims choose to do this it doesnt mean we are all like that and islam is all about fighting and injustice.its not each individual muslim is different, have you never heard the saying never judge a book by its cover.just because some people choose to be like that towards hissan it doesnt mean we all will they are giving islam and muslims a bad name.which by the way i think is wrong,as i have converted to islam from christanity.and its the best thing ive done, ive never had no anamosity from any of the muslim community,on the other hand i get abuse from non-muslims.even when i go to town, people shouting abuse.what give them the right to do that to me,just like what gives the right to do this to hissan and his family.DONT PAINT EVERYTHING WITH THE SAME BRUSH,TO ALL THOSE HYPOCRITES OUT THERE!

I agree, infact i even remarked on how good most of the comments were, i think those who removed them ought to supply a written explaination as to why, much the same as they seem to do sometimes in the Forum section.

This is the consequence of the failed policy of multi-culturalism. By encouraging communities to live in segregated societies, rather than promoting integration, you create ghettos where anyone who is not of the same persuasion as the majority is persecuted. That said, I hope the demographics of lovely Baildon never change too much. Perhaps it's better to leave people in their parallel societies rather than risk stirring the pot and mixing things up too much.

Also, its probably a stunt to distance himself from muslims as we seem to be enemy no1 at the moment!

We're better off without him, over 3000 people revert EVERYDAY in the USA alone, so 1 idiot leaving makes no difference!

Good luck with being a Kuffar!

I have no problem with this guy switching religiong, to be a muslim and then leave is a lot worse than never believing!

I really hope his daughters grow up and embrace the religion once again and turn against their christian father!
you really do have a lot of hate in you don't you...how can you have a username of 'The_Realist' why you believe in a 'sky god', of which there is no proof whats so ever.

You obviously do have a problem with this guy converting..even though you said you don't, and its people like you that this article is all about.

If they should revert to Islam, that wouldnt be turning against their christian father, because as a christian he would have to forgive them. Or did you have something more sinister in mind?
This isnt a contest you know.

If you type in "islam reverts" there are 173,000 sites.
If you type in "islam apostates" there are 551,000 sites.
But as has already been pointed out, this isnt a contest.

Everyone has their right to believe what they like, but those who dont believe are deluded, Why are people born and Why do people die??

Why are there natural disasters and why are we even here???

Islam is, I believe a barrier to progress, irrational, violent, and dangerous, The people who support it are, in my opinion, not wired for life, as far as many peoples perception of Islam is concerned, 98% of the population is asleep, the other 2% are staring around in amazement, abject terror or both. I dont oppose Islam, as a white christian, Islam opposes me, this information has been given to me over many years of news reports from BBC,1,2-ITV 3,4,5, newspapers of every description, stories of killing, assasination, terrorism, murder, bloodshed and I for one am sick to the back teeth with it. No I do not support the BNP, No, I do not support Islam, I have a free mind and it is fully made up?.

Strange when, as far as Judaeism, Christianity and Islam are concerned, they all believe in the same God.
Poor God. I bet it tears him apart.

Its getting silly again!
Why bring Iraq and Afghanistan into this?
People in those countries have been committing genocide for centuries, or is it more acceptable when carried out by fellow believers?
Once again, dont waste the thread on tit for tat throwaway insults.

Oh yeh of course, all the women and kids in the middle east have been killing people for centuries!

If that was the case, does this mean if in say, a decade or 2, the muslims invade our countries and kill our innocent civilians, it will be justified because our "leaders" went to war with them 20 years earlier???

I think not!

If you notice, the thread isnt being wasted, just made longer! cant wait to hear your reply! ;-)

I never mentioned "women and kids" But people have been killing each other in these countries for centuries, and in more recent times, there are different factions killing each other in Iraq everyday, before them Sadam and his henchmen were at it frequently (millions fled the country during his reign). And in Afghanistan Russians, Taliban, various warlords and assorted thugs entering via the Pakistan border have all terrorised the population and still would if given the opportunity. As for your comments regarding "Muslims" invading our country, some might say it has already happened, only time will tell what the outcome will be.

America armed the Taliban during the Cold War, Sigil. Unfortunately the West has made a habit of interfering in the politics of other countries to pursue its own political ends or seize their resources. It's not to say that Islamic states are necessarily in the right - but the issues have escalated so much, and have become so convoluted that it's hardly possible to say how the conflicts started now. The important thing surely is to find ways of finishing them. Let's face it, all of our political leaders have made mistakes - but they're human, so it's to be expected. However I am hopeful that we can overcome the mistrust and fear we're encouraged to feel about each other and live in harmony.

Now go in peace or I'll smack your legs.

I am reasonably aware of the history of the Taliban and the origin of much of their equipment, thankyou very much Mrs Walker.
Do you dispute the validity of my statement, or did you just latch onto it so you could back someone else against me? as seems to be your usual practice.
My comment was a reply to a remark addressed directly to me, and wasnt relevant to this story, so you extending it isnt really contributing to it and infact seems to be one of those back the Islamist at all costs and against anything, that you have become well known for.
Do you have any views on the leaving of this country by Polish people? or indeed any theories as to why they are leaving?
Or have you simply joined the ranks of those who wait in the wings for an opportunity to open where you can practice your comments (which incidentally are starting to look as noticeably biased as some others you tend to attack (only in a different direction of course).

Er, I thought I was offering a fairly balanced and reasonable viewpoint - just where in my post was I 'backing the Islamist at all costs'??

I don't dispute the validity of your statement, but I think you're omitting huge chunks of relevant history - that the USA have been embroiled with regimes - like Saddam's - where they had no business, withdrawing support when it suits their business interests, rather than their ethics. It's not anti-Western rhetoric, or pro-Islamic, just a statement of fact.

I commented about migrants leaving a week or so ago after watching Dispatches. The programme highlighted the financial reasons for the ebb and flow of migrants. I don't have a problem with immigration, only with the sheer numbers of human beings trying to eke out survival on a fragile planet run by greedy corporations and selfish politicians.

Yes but its not relevant to this story (neither really are my remarks about migrants) as it is supposed to be about religious intolerance.

True. This story IS meant to be about religious intolerance.

'Let he who is without sin cast the first stone' etc...

...Guess we'd all better shut up then.
