An inquest opened today into the death of 19-year-old Gavin Terry, a student from Baildon whose body was found in a river.

The hearing was opened and adjourned at Leeds Coroners Court to allow his funeral to take place.

Mr Terry was discovered in the River Aire two months after he went missing after a night out with friends in Leeds, where he was a student.

He was last seen in Revolution nightclub in Call Lane, Leeds, shortly after midnight on January 12.

In the weeks which followed his disappearance, police carried out underwater searches of the river but had begun to fear the worst.

Mr Terry's mother Philomena, 47, along with his 18-year-old brother, Conor, and their uncle, George Ryan, appeared at a press conference to appeal for help in finding him.

His body was found last Wednesday by a workman near to Skelton Grange on the outskirts of Leeds. His mum spoke of her "sense of relief" after visiting the spot where he was found.

She said: "We are all devastated, but it is almost a sense of relief that they have found him. Since he went missing we have had every possible nightmare in our heads but the police always said they were convinced he was in the river.

"We just wanted him found so that we could give him the dignity of a Roman Catholic burial."

The funeral will be at St Cuthbert's Church in Wilmer Road, Heaton, on Thursday, April 3, at 6pm.

There will be a requiem Mass on Friday, April 4, followed by an interment in Bingley.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Missing People and a plate will be available at the funeral.
