Girls Aloud and the Kaiser Chiefs both endured disappointment in the Brit awards tonight.

The bands, both of which have Bradford connections, were beaten by Sheffield's Arctic Monkeys in the Best British Group section.

Girls Aloud have Bradford woman Kimberley Walsh in their ranks, while the Kaiser Chiefs are from Menston.

Arctic Monkeys also won the Best British Album award for Favourite Worst Nightmare.

Denise Van Outen and Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber announced the award for Best International Group as going to the Foo Fighters.

Dr Who star David Tennant presented the Best International Female Solo Artist award to Kylie Minogue. Amy Winehouse's performance was one of the most eagerly anticipated.

Sir Paul McCartney won an award for outstanding contribution to music.
