Moorfield School in Ilkley has been awarded the prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag, above.

Eco-Schools is a national award scheme which promotes environmental awareness among young people.

Pupils at Moorfield, an independent school which caters for girls aged two to 11, carried out an environmental audit of the school, before drawing up an eco-action plan, which has seen children learn more about sustainability, bio-diversity and issues including global warming.

An Eco-Schools inspector was said to be "highly impressed" by his visit to Moorfield. A school spokesman said: "We are delighted to have received the award. The girls worked very hard."

Nearly 9,000 schools have joined the Eco Schools programme in England. However, of those, only around 700 have been awarded a Green Flag.
