Bradford's Radha Kaushal-Bolland cooked up a storm in her first Masterchef heat.

The aspiring chef impressed judges Gregg Wallace and John Torode with two signature dishes on Tuesday's episode.

At this stage in the competition, the first four Masterchef episodes each week will see contestants go head to head before the quarter final in episode five.

Six contestants enter each heat and the winner will become a quarter-finalist

For her signature savoury dish, Radha made vegetable and potato Phaldari koftas filled with sultanas and cranberries served with Makhani tomato curry sauce, pea pilau rice, fresh coriander, pomegranate seeds and fresh roti.

"At university I basically just lived off cheese toasties. Since lockdown, since being at home, mum and dad have been teaching me to cook," Radha said.

"Over the last few months cooking has literally been everything.

"My mum's Indian, my dad's English, so a lot of the food I eat is Indian food."

As the competition heated up, Radha joked about her cheery disposition with another contestant: "If I'm not smiling, I'm crying."

The quality of Radha's dish saw top chefs Gregg and John dish out plenty of compliments.

Greg told Radha: "I'm liking these koftas. They are light, they've got a crispy coating on the outside, they're quite mild with cheese and then of course you get the sweet sharpness of cranberry.

"You'll be pleased to know I think your food tastes absolutely lovely."

He later told John: "I think what we're seeing is a young cook developing. It's exciting to see how far she can go."

Despite her flavourful dish, it was not enough to get past the first round and Radha needed to fight for an apron with her sweet signature dish.

Inspired by her days at boarding school, Radha concocted a pineapple upside down cake with a salted caramel rum sauce.

The law graduate had just one hour and 20 minutes to bag herself a place in the second heat.

But in a shock admission, Radha revealed it was the first time she'd cooked a pudding from scratch.

"How brave is this girl?!," judge John said.

Radha later added: "I've got quite a bit of adrenaline, I can't stop smiling."

Luckily, Radha's natural culinary talents put her in John and Gregg's good books.

"It's fantastic," John said.

"There's cinnamon dancing around on the little bits of pineapple. I absolutely love it."

Radha made it through to the second heat on BBC One's Masterchef alongside Hannah, Farokh and Angela.

Meanwhile John, Dean and Mark were crowned winners of the first three aprons in the savoury dish section.

"I think I showed them everything about me," Radha said.
