A pensioner may have inadvertently started a blaze in her flat with a burning cigarette.

The woman's settee went up in smoke in her first floor flat at Whetley Hill, Manningham, at around 9.30pm on New Year's Eve.

A neighbour raised the alarm and the woman was checked over by paramedics and taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary as a precautionary measure.

Firefighters attended for around 45 minutes and the living room was smoke damaged.
