Leading Bradford businessman Jack Tordoff, pictured, has expressed his delight at being awarded the MBE in the 2008 New Year's Honours List.

Mr Tordoff founded JCT600, one of the premier car dealerships in the country, and will receive the MBE for services to Business and Sport.

A self-made millionaire, Mr Tordoff started from humble beginnings as an assistant mechanic at his father's small firm.

Mr Tordoff transformed the business into a multi-million pound car empire with more than 30 dealerships.

JCT600 takes its name from Mr Tordoff's Mercedes-Benz 600 personalised number plate, and it was in a Porsche 911 bearing that registration that he won the International Circuit of Ireland in 1973.

Speaking to the Telegraph & Argus this week he said: "I am absolutely delighted. I first heard about this about seven weeks ago when they wrote to ask me whether I would accept the honour; but you have to keep it to yourself.

"My face lit up when I opened the letter. I knew it was something special right away because the envelope had 10 Downing Street on it."

"This is one of the crowning moments in my career. I would like to thank all those who have worked for me over the last 50 years to make JCT600 the success it is.

"I would also like to thank Bradford Council for recognising the contribution we have made to the city.

"It is very satisfying to be recognised and I see this as an award for all the people who have worked with me."

Under Mr Tordoff, JCT600 has sponsored Bradford City and Bradford Bulls as well as rugby and cricket leagues. The award also recognises this contribution.
