Hackney carriage and private hire vehicles can now apply to display commercial advertising for the first time in Bradford.

The Council's Regulatory and Appeals Committee approved a recommendation so taxis and minicabs can carry adverts to help pay for security cameras to improve the safety of drivers and passengers, after it was revealed drivers in West Yorkshire had suffered more than 447 violent crimes in the last 12 months.

The Council will conduct annual checks to ensure the money raised through advertising will be spent on the appropriate CCTV equipment.

The committee did however make amendments to the terms and conditions originally cited in the recommendation.

Committee member Councillor Christopher Greaves said: "What we have said is we don't want to micro-manage the subsequent amendments.

"That is the job of the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) and if people do see what they believe to be an inappropriate advert it is the ASA who they should contact."

The committee will meet again in January to decide on exactly where adverts can be placed on doors to ensure members of the public can tell the difference between private hire and hackney carriages.

For the time being, adverts will not be allowed on the front doors of the vehicles.
