A text messaging service developed by bus company Metro has reached the two million message mark this week.

Launched in September 2005, yournextbus was developed in response to bus passengers wanting accurate, up-to-the-minute information about when their bus was going to arrive.

Message one million was delivered in February this year while the second million was completed at 5.57pm on Tuesday, November 13.

Metro chairman Councillor Ryk Downes said: "yournextbus is having a really positive impact on bus travel in West Yorkshire.

"More than half of bus passengers we recently surveyed said they were aware of the service with 13 per cent saying the used buses more as a result of it.

"Two million text messages have now been sent and many thousands of people have also used yournextbus through the Metro web site at www.wymetro.com and by WAP at the same address, with more than one million web and WAP hits recorded."

If buses ran on time and a time table was at every bus stop there would be no need to text.Instead of hailing it a success may I sugest its an admission of failure that people need to text to find out where there bus is after waiting way past its alloted arrival time.

There are often negative comments on this site, but this one takes the biscuit. An admission of failure? It is inevitable that the effects of conjestion will limit bus companies ability to keep to timetables - particularly at peak times. Far better to have a means of keeping the customer informed - and THATS why it is a success. Of course it would be great if buses hit every stop precisely on time, but despite what some might think this is the real world! Bus companies arent perfect, and their timetables often raise unrealistic expectations, but the fact is there are many things that influence the comapnies' ability to perform. Well done Metro for recognising the problems that late and cancelled services cause customers and coming up with an effective system to limit that.

I've used it several times to find out that no bus was on its way at all, so had to go and catch the train instead!

The problem with this service is it only tells you the time that the next bus is scheduled to arrive. It cannot tell you if the bus has been delayed or if you have missed one because it was early (which doesn't happen often)!
