A ROAD behind Bradford Royal Infirmary (BRI) has been partly closed following a crash which involved three cars.

Emergency services are at the scene on Smith Lane at its junction with Locarno Avenue, on the outside edge of the hospital.

Police confirmed the incident took place at about 1:10pm today and that a police car was involved, but not in the physical collision itself.

Due to police involvement in the incident, the matter has been referred to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC).

An IOPC spokesperson said: "We have been notified by West Yorkshire Police of a road traffic incident in which a man has suffered serious injuries.

"We understand the car in which the man was driving collided with another vehicle."

A bystander described seeing damage to a 4x4 Nissan Navara, a Volkswagen and a Toyota Yaris.

They said: "The front of the Navara is smashed in, the Yaris has its front damaged and the back of the Volkswagen has been hurt."

Ambulance and fire were also believed to be at the scene.

Smith Lane is partially closed, according to a witness.

Another said at 3:42 today: "It’s still closed, it looks really bad."

One source said that there was a pregnant lady in one of the cars.

Nour Kousar said on Facebook: "I pray no one was seriously injured especially any pregnant ladies heading to hospital, as Smith Lane is the main access route to the Maternity hospital!"

A spokesperson for police said: "One man was taken to hospital with serious but not life threatening injuries, and a woman was also taken to hospital as a precaution."

The IOPC has sent investigators to the scene and to the post incident procedures.

It has also begun an independent investigation.
