A WHIRLWIND week has led to the announcement that a popular ride out for Harley fanatics will now go ahead on this year’s final bank holiday weekend.

The ride out, part of the Shipley Harley Rally, was originally cancelled last week amid safety concerns for riders and the public, with more and more people turning up each year.

It has reached such levels of popularity that organisers were told they must sort the ride out professionally if they wanted it to happen - such as proper road closures and marshals.

A statement was released by the Wrecking Crew Harley-Davidson Club (HDC) explaining the cancellation and expressing its dismay at having to put the brakes on the event.

A poll run by the T&A on the original article showed 84 per cent of 934 people who responded were disappointed the Harley Ride Out had been cancelled.

Bradford Council also gave a lengthy statement offering its support – and it now seems some form of arrangement has come together.

In a quickfire turnaround, the ride out will now go ahead on Sunday, August 26, after organiser Mick Moran predicted only last week that he was confident they would take to their motorbikes again in 2019, if the community worked together.

A spokesperson from Wrecking Crew Harley-Davidson Club said: “We have been working with Bradford Council, Baildon Town Council, and local businesses and we are pleased to announce that this year’s Charity Ride out will now be able to go ahead.”

They added: “There has been lots of emails exchanged, conversations had, and meetings held. On social media, we have received a great deal of support and understanding.”

As in previous years, the ride out will begin at 1pm in Baildon village centre and will be in aid of the Children’s Ward at Bradford Royal Infirmary.

Nurses from BRI will be on-site at Baildon Rugby Club following the ride out to collect donations for children at the ward.

Organisers are asking for people to bring books, pens, pencils, crayons and games but the hospital can only accept them if they’re new.

A Bradford Council spokesperson said “We were glad to be able to support the

organisers through the process of arranging the traffic management, crowd control and marshalling that is essential to make the event safe.

“We are working alongside the organisers with ward councillors, ward officers, Baildon Town Council and local businesses to set up an organising committee to support the day’s events.”
