BRADFORD Council says it has contacted a local brewery to see if anything can be done to keep the business going.

The Bradford Brewery reportedly closed at the weekend with little warning after operating for around three years.

It is thought the popular drinking spot, on Rawson Road, officially opened for the final time on Saturday.

But a spokesperson for the Council revealed that the local authority had been in touch with the owners about finding a way of avoiding a permanent closure.

The Council spokesperson said: “We are very sad to hear that Bradford Brewery is closing. We have been in touch with the owners to see if there is anything we can do to keep the business going.”

The council was active in the beginning of the brewery’s journey, when it part-funded the £400,000 needed for the company’s move into a historic industrial building, as part of its Bradford Council Growth Zone grant scheme.

Dragons’ Den star, Doug Richards, was also an early supporter.

Since opening in 2015, the brewery cemented itself as a popular part of Bradford’s nightlife and the ‘top of town’ area.

The brewery-come-pub was founded by Matt Halliday in a move that brought brewing back to Bradford city centre for the first time in almost 60 years.

Within only months of opening, the brewery received the accolade of New Business of the Year award at the T&A’s Bradford Means Business Awards, under the stewardship of Mr Halliday, who left last year for a new venture.

Bradford Brewery had its own ‘Made of Bradford’ brand and also took over the Exchange Ale House, below the Wool Exchange on Market Street, last year.

One of the beers crafted by the brewery was its popular Hockney Pale.

Most recently, Bradford Brewery helped the T&A celebrate its 150th Anniversary with a specially-created brew.

According to the Companies House Government database, the business is still active, but a sign on the door of the brewery building and a note on its website confirmed Bradford Brewery was to close.

The notice on the building door thanked all its customers and stated its final opening days were on Friday from 12pm until 12am, and Saturday for the same hours, or until stock ran out.

Earlier yesterday morning the website read: “Unfortunately, Bradford Brewery has now closed.”

It’s believed that around a dozen jobs are to be lost as a result of the closure.

The Bradford Brewery was approached for a comment.
