A CARE home in Latchford has been ordered to improve after inspectors found that parts of the building had fallen into disrepair.

Westy Hall Residential Care Home has been told to improve by the Care Quality Commission following an unannounced inspection in June.

A total of four breaches of health and social care regulations were found at the Marsden Avenue home, which can house up to 39 elderly people.

Inspectors found that parts of the care had 'not been maintained to a satisfactory standard' and were in need of refurbishment and redecoration.

Communal carpets on the ground floor, which accommodated residents with dementia, were stained and in need of replacement.

A number of seals on double glazing windows had failed, causing condensation to collect between the panes - including seven in the main dining room and seven in the second-floor lounge.

The CQC said that this was 'unsightly' and obscured residents' views of the home's grounds.

One resident had a broken chest of drawers in their bedroom, while further work was require in an upstairs bathroom and the laundry area.

Inspectors also found a number of issues with care records that could have put residents at risk.

The CQC's report said: "We identified a number of issues during our inspection that were in need of attention.

"These covered a range of areas, relating to the standard of the premises and equipment, records and activities."

However, the CQC did find that there was a 'caring engaging and safe environment' at the care home.

A spokesman for Westy Hall said: "At the time of the CQC's inspection, the home was undergoing some refurbishment to improve the physical environment - a programme of further, more extensive refurbishment is planned as part of our ongoing maintenance and improvement plan for the home.

"All staff have been given additional support and training to ensure governance and maintenance of records meets the high standards set across the group, this will be ongoing.

"It was recognised within the report that we have established systems in place and staff have created a caring, engaging and safe environment for all of our residents.

"We will continue to work closely with the CQC and local authority to ensure we are delivering the highest standard of care possible."
