A MAN has been seriously injured in a crash this afternoon.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said emergency services were called to the scene on Thornton Road, near the Tyke Pub, at around 3.20pm.It's thought there was one vehicle, a grey Volkswagen Touareg, involved which hit some bollards.

A number of ambulances and fire engines attended and traffic was diverted.

A Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokesperson said the man, aged 40, was airlifted to the Leeds General Infirmary.

Tony Fouassier, 33, who lives on Thornton Road said he heard a "massive" crash and bang.

Firefighters from Fairweather Green and Shipley were called to the crash.

Watch Commander Dean McKenna said the man was driving down Thornton Road towards Bradford when he lost control, though it's not currently clear how that happened.

He said the car had a trailer on the back of it and as the driver lost control of the vehicle, it hit some traffic islands then jack knifed.

Watch Commander McKenna said the trailer somehow detached from the vehicle which then hit a tree. Another car was also damaged.

He said they managed to get the driver out promptly before he was taken to hospital.

A pregnant woman, who asked not to be named, was just about to pull out from the Tesco Express nearby when the crash unfolded.

She said: "All of a sudden, out of nowhere, he came flying down the central reservation. He already had an island bollard under his car.

"There was smoke and dust flying everywhere."

She said he went over another bollard and then there was a "massive bang" when he hit a tree, leaving the trailer wrapped around the front of the car.

The woman added: "I was crying, I was proper scared.

"It was just so horrific. I got out of my car and rang the ambulance and emergency services.

"It was the worst thing I've ever seen in my life. It was like a final destination moment when you realise what could have happened."
