THE safety of a Bradford nursing home has been slammed as 'inadequate' following an unannounced inspection earlier this year.

Inspectors from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) visited Staveley Birkleas Nursing Home, Nab Wood, in May. It is run by the Czajka Care Group.

The report from the inspection states: "This inspection was conducted following information of concern which we received which included a number of

safeguarding concerns about the service. The primary aim of the inspection was to check the safety of the service and the ongoing risk of harm to people."

A comprehensive inspection of the home was carried out in January this year, where there were two regulation breaches.

The latest inspection found the home was still in breach of those regulations.

In the January inspection, the home was rated as 'requires improvement' in the 'is the service safe?' inspection marker.

But following the latest inspection, inspectors said: "Although at this inspection we did not look at the whole safe domain, we identified widespread concerns regarding risk management processes within the home which did not give us assurance about the ongoing management of risk. It is because of this that we have rated the domain as 'inadequate'."

Inspectors raised concerns about risk management processes.

They also highlighted an incident where there was an altercation between service users.

The report said: "Although we saw the service had liaised with safeguarding and the victim and asked if they wanted to take further action, there was no preventative measures documented within the people's care plans."

While improvements had been made to nurse staffing levels, people were not always provided with their contracted one-to-one support hours, the report said.

The home was also judged to be 'requires improvement' in the ''is the service well-led?' question and remained at that rating overall.

Konrad Czajka, Czajka Care Group’s managing director, said: “We are taking this CQC report extremely seriously.

"An overall rating of ‘requires improvement’ at Staveley Birkleas falls short of where we should be, especially because our four other West Yorkshire care and nursing homes all have ‘good’ CQC ratings. Following this inspection, we immediately started making changes to address the issues raised and have already made major progress. We have made managerial changes and we are in constant communication with the CQC, to ensure we are meeting and exceeding their expectations.

"While there is still work to do, we are confident our residents and everyone else associated with Staveley Birkleas are already seeing improvements and we are looking forward to welcoming the inspectors back soon to see the work we’ve done.”
