SIR - A great deal of thought has gone into issues raised by B Barraclough (T&A letters, July 13), during our five-year campaign to preserve Queensbury Tunnel. Our long-term vision is for it to be a heritage feature in a cycle/walkway connecting Bradford, Halifax and Keighley. The whole tunnel falls within Bradford MDC, but an access path at the southern end will cross the district border into Calderdale, whose support is vital. The landowner at the southern end has been a terrific ally, allowing Sustrans to map an access route through his proposed industrial development.

The track from the northern portal leads to the former Queensbury Station site, one option is to extend a greenway towards Bradford city centre via Clayton and Girlington, whilst the Great Northern Railway Trail over Thornton viaduct would be connected over Hewenden and Cullingworth viaducts, extended towards Ingrow. It’s a fabulous vision and all do-able, given joint will of Bradford and Calderdale to prevent Highways England from destroying Queensbury Tunnel, using approx. £3.2 million of taxpayers' money.

Our immediate concern is for Bradford’s current investigation into the viability of the tunnel to be completed without hindrance from Highways England. To date 9,282 people have signed our e-petition at change.org to prevent the tunnel’s destruction. Visit queensburytunnel.org.uk
