HANGING Heaton scored a thrilling five-run win over Methley to retain the JW Lees Brewery T20 Group A Cup at Bennett Lane.

The highlight was an 18-ball half-century from opener Ben Kohler-Cadmore that set the tone for a frenetic start.

The final certainly didn't lack for excitement from the moment Kohler-Cadmore took 28 from the game's opening over from Sohail Raz.

Methley hit back from the first ball of the second over when Waqas Ahmed clean bowled Hanging Heaton skipper Gary Fellows.

Five wides followed from his second delivery before he bowled dangerman Callum Geldart with his next legitimate ball.

Ahmed was clearly warming to his task and had Joe Fraser caught by skipper Grant Soames as Hanging Heaton slipped to 43-3.

Methley stuck to their task and with the score on 69 they struck two big blows.

Nick Connolly was run out and Kohler-Cadmore, who had hit three sixes and seven fours, was caught by Adam Patel as Raz finally got revenge for his first-over torment.

Finding themselves 69-5 after just five eventful overs, Hanging Heaton knew they had to temper their approach. Ishmail Dawood and James Keen added 31 before both fell in quick succession to Marcus Walmsley and Adal Islam respectively.

The later order batsmen Aqsad Ali (19), Josh Holling (12no) and Tom Chippendale (11) made useful runs as Hanging Heaton made 166 all out, the final wicket falling to the last ball of their 20 overs.

The total also received a decisive boost from the 33 extras conceded by Methley which was to prove critical.

The impressive Ahmed finished with 4-36 while Walmsley had tidy figures of 2-26.

Chippendale struck early in the Methley innings to remove Adal Islam, but Adam Patel, a player with a fine T20 record, was soon into his stride.

Methley were making good progress when Geldart was introduced to the attack with telling effect. He removed Dan Shuffe and Walmsley in his first over with the total on 50.

Geldart also claimed the key wicket of Patel after the opener had made 48 of the 60 runs on the board. His runs had come off 24 balls.

Methley's hopes of winning the cup looked to have evaporated when Jordan Laban, Ashton Blakey and Soames, all good strikers of the ball, were dismissed to slip to 95-7. Geldart claimed the wicket of Soames to finish with 4-45.

It says much for the spirit in the Methley side that they never threw in the towel. Jake Smart (29), Raz (16) and Ahmed (25) counter attacked. The target was six from three balls when Ahmed was caught by Chippendale off Holling to seal the win for Hanging Heaton.

The winning margin was five runs and when Methley reflect on a narrow final loss, they will realise just how crucial the 33 extras they conceded were – especially as their opponents gave away just six.
