A FATHER involved in two “disgraceful” attacks outside a Bingley nightclub, one of which left a man with a bleed on the brain, has been jailed for more than five years.

Bradford Crown Court heard that Kevin Haley, 28, had been drinking in the Bijou club on October 2, 2016, before violence erupted outside the venue.

Prosecutor Ian Howard said that as a couple were looking for a taxi, they were assaulted by a group of men including the defendant, with the man subsequently knocked to the floor.

They sought refuge in a nearby doorway, at which point Haley came to apologise for the incident.

But, Mr Howard said that Haley’s “contrition didn’t last long”, as the defendant then twice punched the man to the face, also punching his girlfriend when she tried to intervene.

The couple were said to be “traumatised” by the assault, with the man needing hospital treatment and surgery for a broken cheekbone and nose.

The court heard that after the first attack, Haley and the group he was with “turned their attention” to another man, who was said to be heavily under the influence of drink.

As the man was lying on the ground, Haley and others punched him repeatedly, with one kicking him full in the face.

Mr Howard described the attack as a “deliberate targeting of a vulnerable drunk individual.”

The victim was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with an acute subdural hematoma - a blood clot on the brain - and a broken nose and cheekbones.

Haley, of Cobden Street, Allerton, was arrested a month after the attacks on December 3, but denied any involvement. He was picked out in an identification parade by the girlfriend of the man in the first attack and the manager of Bijou.

Mr Howard said that while on bail, Haley burgled houses in Halifax and Bradford, being caught on both occasions by CCTV.

In the first raid, on March 9 this year, Haley and another man targeted a property on Warley Road, Halifax, kicking out a panel on the front door to steal car keys, cash, and jewellery.

In the second burglary, on March 27, the defendant acted alone to force a window and gain entry to a house on Grange Road, Allerton, Bradford, from which he stole £6,000 worth of jewellery.

Haley pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and burglary.

In mitigation, the court heard that Haley, father to a one year-old daughter, was “shamed” by his behaviour in the nightclub attacks, but denied kicking any of his victims.

The burglaries were described as “unsophisticated” offences, committed without any occupants of the houses being present.

Sentencing Haley to 63 months in prison, Judge David Hatton QC said: “You engaged in disgraceful drinking feuds and public violence that caused, in both cases, serious injury.

“Unfortunately, while on bail you went on to commit two house burglaries and in the second, valuable property was stolen.”

Speaking after the sentencing, detective constable Priscilla Haigh, of Bradford District CID, said: “Haley attacked his victims with such force that some of them required prolonged treatment after their stays in hospital.

“We hope this outcome will give them some closure and will deter others from getting involved in violence.”
