TWO more care homes in Bradford have been ordered to improve by the health watchdog.

Silverlea Care Home, Bradford Moor, and Holly Park Care Home, Clayton, were both given a ‘requires improvement’ rating by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Inspectors visited Silverlea in April and judged it as needing improvement in all areas aside from the marker relating to how caring the service in, for which it was judged to be good.

A report published following the inspection said: “Overall we found people were receiving their medicines when they needed them, although some improvements were needed to help ensure consistently safe practice.”

Inspectors also raised some concerns about fire safety in the premises.

They said: “Fire doors were not closing securely into the frames, some items of furniture did not have fire-resistant tags on them and the second floor landing was being used for storage. Fire alarms were tested on a weekly basis but the fire doors had not been checked since January 2018.”

Inspectors also said the service needed to “establish effective mechanisms to ensure it kept up-to-date with best practice and the latest developments in care”.

The home’s audit system was also criticised and a breach of regulation was identified.

However, inspectors said people were treated with dignity and respect and that staff were kind and caring

A spokesperson for the home said: “Silverlea Care Home was acquired by the new owners in February 2017. Improvements have been ongoing since then and will continue until good standards are met. This is reflected in the owners’ other two residential homes based in Bradford which are both rated as ‘good’.

“Management and owners understand and are addressing the recent inspection findings and many of these have already been actioned since the date of the inspection.”

Holly Park Care Home was inspected in May. It was rated as requiring improvement in two areas – safety and leadership – but good in all other areas.

Inspectors said medicines were not always managed safely and the home was not yet consistently well-led.

A spokesperson for the home said they were disappointed with the ‘requires improvement’ rating in the two areas of safety and leadership and management, but an action plan had been prepared and the home was working with the CQC and partners to ensure it was rated good overall at the next inspection. They also thanked all those who had helped at Holly Park over the last 12 months.
