ISSUES such as body image, youth crime and mental health are currently being explored in artworks on display at Bradford College.

Students from a number of art and design courses at the college are exhibiting their work in the Dye House Gallery at the annual end of year show.

Works include paintings, photography, sculptures, textiles and more, and are all on show for the public to get a glimpse of this week.

Chelsey Molineux, from Odsal, used her own experiences of mental health in her work, which includes a photo, mask and body cast.

She said: “I never thought I would express how I felt so publicly but I have found it therapeutic.”

Samantha Johnson, from Wibsey has produced giant illuminated images of women as part of her Art & Design course.

She added: “My work is based on body image and race.

“I wanted to show that beauty should not be a particular size or shape. The images are drawn using electrical tape on Perspex and they are illuminated to make them proudly standout.”

Baljit Panesar, School of Arts, Media and Digital Technologies programme manager, said: “This is a fascinating exhibition, full of thought-provoking artwork.

“It showcases the talent we have in the college and the freedom our students enjoy to explore many different areas of art thanks to the excellent kit and equipment we have in the college including textile and printmaking equipment, studio space, the latest film and photography equipment and ceramic studios.

“Before coming to us, few students will have had the chance to use a lot of the specialist equipment that we have here, so it is great to see how they have learned to use the equipment and experiment with different mediums to unleash their creativity.”

Other issues covered in the exhibition include mankind’s relationship with nature, youth crime and gang violence, and the issue of poverty and families relying on food banks.

The exhibition is open from 10.30am to 4pm until Friday, June 29, and entry is free to all.

It is situated in the Dye House Gallery in Bradford College’s Lister Building.
