Road safety campaigners have reacted with “concern” after footage emerged of a Metro AccessBus performing a “dangerous” overtake in Bradford.

The dashcam footage, captured in Canal Road on Saturday, June 16, shows a Metro Access Bus - a door-to-door service which is used by elderly and disabled people who cannot get to bus stops - attempting to overtake another vehicle.

Oncoming traffic is forced to take evasive action and brake as the bus approaches in the middle of the single lane road, narrowly avoiding a head-on collision.

This section of Canal Road is a 40mph zone, and is monitored by speed cameras.

A spokesperson for Brake, the road safety charity, said: “This footage is incredibly concerning and it is shocking to see a Metro AccessBus driver exhibiting such dangerous behaviour.

“Their irresponsible actions are risking the lives of not only their vulnerable passengers but all other road users too.

“Thanks to technology we now have permanent evidence of this behaviour and we hope that Metro launch a full investigation.”

Metro is the transport network of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, which was asked if it is investigating the behaviour of the Access Bus driver.

A West Yorkshire Combined Authority spokesperson said: “AccessBus services, which provide AccessBus dial-a-ride, door-to-door local for people who are unable to use standard bus services, are run by a number of bus companies on our behalf.

“We encourage anyone spotting an occurrence that causes them concern to report it to us so that we can take up with the service’s operator.”

The driver who submitted the dashcam footage, who asked not to be named, added: “The bus driver almost had a head-on collision with me whilst he was attempting a dangerous overtake on the opposite side of the road.

“I was driving along Canal Road when I had to slow down because I could see a bus coming head-on in my lane.

“The bus driver was performing a very dangerous overtake and caused me to slow down and move to the side of the road to avoid having a head on accident.”

Emmerson Walgrove, chair of Bradford & District Disabled People’s Forum, said: “The Disabled Forum is concerned and worried that the AccessBus is performing manoeuvres in the district that are dangerous and unacceptable when transporting disabled and vulnerable people around the district.

“We are very concerned and this is not appropriate for a reasonable company, and there needs to be an investigation into this by Metro, and it may need to reconsider who it is contracting the Access Bus to.”
