TWO men have been arrested after a man suffered serious injuries after being attacked with a machete during a fight in Shipley.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the incident on Leeds Road, near the junction with West Royd Avenue, Windhill, at around 12.40pm yesterday.

A police spokesman said that officers armed with tasers had attended the scene after reports of a fight in the street.

At the scene, officers found one injured man, who had suffered cuts to his head and serious injuries to his hand.

Police said the injuries were consistent with that of an attack using a machete or another bladed article, and confirmed that a machete-type weapon had been recovered from the area.

The injured man was taken to hospital, and his injuries were described as serious but not life-threatening.

Police later confirmed that a man had been attacked and a car damaged following an earlier incident in which two houses had windows put through.

A spokesman for the Shipley Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) said tonight: “Shortly after midday on June 23, a couple of related incidents occurred on Woodend Crescent and Leeds Road, Windhill.

“Two addresses on Woodend Crescent had some windows smashed and an altercation took place on Leeds Road where a VW Golf had a window smashed and a male was attacked with a machete.

“Shipley NPT and patrol officers attended and established a scene. The injured male has none-life-threatening injuries and is being treated in hospital.

“NPT officers have attended an address in Wrose where a vehicle has been recovered and two suspects have been arrested “The two suspects remain in police custody.

“The weapon used in the attack has been recovered.

“Police believe this to be a targeted attack and do not believe there is a risk of attack to the public.

“Shipley NPT are maintaining high visibility patrols in the area for public assurance.

“Anyone with any information is urged to contact the police on 101 or to email Shipley NPT.”

Speaking this afternoon, a police spokesman said that at least one of the two men remained in police custody, with the victim due to undergo an operation on his finger this evening.

Police had initially described the incident as one involving two groups of men, each containing around three to four people, throwing bricks at each other, with some reportedly armed with weapons including a machete and baseball bat.

One witness described the bottom of West Royd Avenue, where the road meets Woodend Crescent, as being "all taped off with blood everywhere."

He said that glass and blood-stained clothing could be seen in the road before a man was taken to hospital by ambulance.

He described the man as being white, aged in his late 30s to early 40s.
