THE organisers of this year’s Bradford Pride event will tomorrow find out if they will be able to hold it in the city centre for the first time since 2015.

After being held in Odsal Stadium for the past two years, the plan is for this year’s event, planned for this Saturday, to be held in the Morley Street area.

Organisers have applied to Bradford Council for a temporary event notice to allow them to provide entertainment in area between Flares nightclub and the former Walkabout building between 1pm and 9pm, and will find out if their application is successful today.

The event, the 13th Bradford Pride, is expected to attract hundreds of people.

However, West Yorkshire Police have raised concerns about the proposals, and Bradford Council’s Licensing Committee will tomorrow be asked to decide whether to allow the temporary event notice.

Police say they had received few details of the event, and in a letter to Bradford Council said: “The physical location of the proposed event is much smaller than on previous occasions, which leads to major concerns of overcrowding.”

They also pointed out that there are a number of other big events in the city centre the same day.

But police add: “Following further adequate consultation and the submitting of necessary paperwork and event plans by organisers, West Yorkshire Police may withdraw this objection.

The Telegraph & Argus understands that organisers are working to deal with the concerns raised by police in time for the meeting in the hope they will withdraw their objection.

UNtil this weekend online posters for the event only listed it event as happening in the “city centre” and say there will be a main stage, cabaret stage, food and rides.

The annual event, celebrating Bradford’s LGBTQ+ community, had previously been held in City Park and attracted around 10,000 people a year.

However, in 2016 its future looked in doubt due to licensing issues and rising running costs.

But after overwhelming support the event was saved, and re-located to Bradford Bulls Stadium, where it was held in May 2016 and May 2017.

Bradford Pride is due to take place one one of the busiest weekend of the year for the city centre.

It is on the same day as Bradford’s Armed Forces Day, which will see a service at the Cenotaph and in the City Park temporary garden.

And it will also be the first Saturday of the Bradford Literature Festival, which will include a superheroes themed day of events for children in City Park.

A comic convention linked to the literature festival is being held in the University of Bradford.

The events are expected to attract thousands to the city centre throughout the day.

Bradford Council’s Licensing Committee will make a decision on whether to grant the events licence when it meets in City Hall tomorrow at 1.30pm.
