RESIDENTS are concerned about the amount of traffic passing by their homes.

People living on School Green in Thornton, Bradford, say cars and larger vehicles using the side road are causing noise and safety issues.

Tracey Thompson, 45, who lives on School Green, said: “People use our road to take short cuts.

“The traffic is relentless, the road is not designed for this.”

Signs have been put up to warn drivers that the road is unsuitable for HGVs but Miss Thompson said they are ignored.

“My cat was killed on Monday. It’s not going to get any better if nothing is done about it.

“I cannot send my son out without fearing for his safety. We are living on the edge all of the time.”

Neighbour Martin Mitchell said: “It’s total congestion and people are stuck in traffic jams outside the house.

“The heavy goods vehicles are blocking the road so that we can’t even come in and out of the drive.

“There is damage to the road. It’s in a shocking condition.”

The residents have come together to form a paper petition, and have also notified Bradford Council.

Councillor Sue Duffy (Lab, Thornton and Allerton) said: “Right now there is no definitive answer to resolve the issues but there are a range of possibilities put forward.

“It is a difficult area, but there will be some road improvements.

“These houses were not built for the traffic on our roads today.”

Residents are also aiming to stop HGVs using the road to get to a nearby building site.

Keepmoat Homes has moved onto the second phase of development of houses on Allerton Lane, which leads onto School Green.

A spokesperson said: “We would not send HGVs down the road in question at School Green Road as we use a different route, that is safer and accessible, to enter our site.

“As a precaution we are now contacting our contractors who use large vehicles to reiterate that they should stick to our prescribed route that avoids this area.”

The petition over use of the road will be presented to a meeting of the full council on July 17.
