A SHIPLEY man is gearing up for a marathon cycle ride on Saturday which will see him take on the length of the Leeds-Liverpool canal.

John Sherlock, 39, who works in the IT services department for Bradford Council, is taking on the 127 mile ride to raise awareness and funds for the Stroke Association.

He is doing the ride to honour a friend of his, Matt Baggley, who suffered a series of strokes at the end of 2016.

"It was a huge shock to all his family and friends as he was only in his mid-thirties.

"Thankfully, due to his determination, the support of his family and friends and the amazing care he received from staff in the NHS he is making a remarkable recovery.

"The Stroke Association helps those affected and their families so I decided to take on a personal challenge and try to raise some money for them," said Mr Sherlock.

Stroke is sudden and devastating, striking every five minutes in the UK. It can take away your speech, your ability to walk, your memory and your independence.

Currently the Stroke Association is only able to provide support to 50 per cent of stroke survivors across the UK. With much-needed funds the Association can help even more people.

Mr Sherlock's efforts through his fundraising page currently stand at £770 after initially setting a target of £500.
