DASHCAM footage captures the terrifying moment two cars narrowly avoided a head-on collision after weaving in and out of rush hour traffic – on the wrong side of road.

An ex-police officer filmed the near-miss in Bradford city centre on a dashcam in May this year.

The now civilian, who does not wish to be named, has been left outraged by what he describes as drivers being a “law unto themselves” in Bradford.

And he said driving conditions in Bradford are worse than central London.

The former officer, who worked for the Met for six years, is calling for police to dish out tougher punishments on those responsible as part of a crackdown.

He said: “This is Bradford, they are a law unto themselves here.

“To be honest I am ex-police myself having served six years in the Met before moving here and I have never seen anything like the driving that I see in this place that is Bradford.

“These two cars came racing towards me and the oncoming traffic on the wrong side of the road and just carried on like it was normal.

“People like this are not bothered about the law and it is about time the police got tougher and cracked down on this sort of shocking driving.

“I used to drive police cars through central London and Bradford is the worst place I have ever seen.

“It’s only a matter of time before someone gets killed down here. This sort of driving needs exposed and I hope you will do that.”

The incident captured on camera was taken near the point where Prince’s Way becomes Godwin Street, outside the former Odeon cinema.

The cars, both silver, appeared to have turned right out of Thornton Road but had failed to cross onto the correct side of the road, closest to City Park, before being driven towards towards Jacob’s Well roundabout.

The footage shows stunned motorists taking emergency evasive action as the vehicles, a Ford Focus and a Volkswagen Golf R estate, force their way between two lanes of oncoming traffic as they head towards the roundabout.

A number of pedestrians, who were waiting at the main crossing outside the former Odeon, look on as the vehicles go past.

Meanwhile, the former police officer can be heard to exclaim: “What the f****** hell are you doing?” before adding: “You’re having a laugh.”

The clip is just the latest in a succession of dashcam clips that have emerged since the Telegraph & Argus started its Stop the Danger Drivers campaign.

Operation Steerside, the police crackdown on dangerous drivers in the Bradford district, was partly inspired by the T&A campaign and has seen thousands of motorists snared by officers.

Earlier this year, a “community impact statement” was received by judges at Bradford Crown Court looking at the effects of dangerous driving, to be used when sentencing those convicted of the crime.
