A STRIKING new poster has been unveiled to promote Refugee Week in Bradford next month.

The winning design by Jahid Malik, a student at Lapage Primary School, was turned into the poster design by graphic designer Mike Barrett.

This year the theme for Refugee Week, which runs from June 18 to 24, is My Dream, and there will be a number of events taking place across the district.

A planning group has been meeting since last October to organiser the week-long event in the city, and ran a competition with local schools.

There will be a launch event on Monday, June 18, at 5pm at Margaret McMillan Tower, with poettry, music and drama from schools, youth groups and older performers.

A closing festival, in Centenary Square, on Saturday, June 23, will be shared with the 70th anniversary celebrations of the arrival of the Windrush migrants from the Caribbean.

The Festival will feature music on the big stage, food, a fair, children's activities and workshops.

Bradford City of Sanctuary is also organising a fifth annual art exhibition at Capital of Cycling, Hall Ings, from June 18 to 23. This is an all-age, mixed-media exhibition and there will be individual and collaborative work from schools, groups and established artists.

Organiser Mary Blacka said: "The planning group had decided to move events back into the heart of the city, to make it easier for more people to take part.

"We are reaching out to new performers and new audiences."

Other events during Refugee Week include the annual Walk for Justice, from Bradford to Leeds, on Wednesday, June 20, organised by BEACON and a special service at the Cathedral, on Sunday, June 24.

There will also be film screenings, a football tournament, picnics and parties.

A spokesman from Lapage Primary School said of the school's involvement in the week: "At Lapage, we believe it is important to welcome all communities and cultures, and refugee week is an integral element in celebrating diversity and cohesion in our community by recognising the contribution of refugees in our community and welcoming them to our homes.

"In our school, we believe strongly in promoting social, moral, spiritual and cultural values at the essence of British values is celebrating differences so that we have a productive and progressive society. Both our pupils and our staff contribute to this and we are very proud of Jahid's artwork being chosen as the cover image for this year's refugee week."

Refugee Week takes place every year across the world in the week around World Refugee Day on the 20 June.
