A BIRTHDAY card from the Queen and a personal visit from the Lord Mayor of Bradford and his consort helped Marjorie Smith celebrate her 100th birthday today.

Mrs Smith, nee Calvert, was born at Swain House Farm and learned sewing and millinery skills from her mother.

In 1940 Marjorie married Arthur Smith at St James’ Church, and after the war took up residence at 215 Wrose Road and the grocers/newsagents shop.

This became their home, along with her father, for 28 years.

Marjorie and Arthur enjoyed holidays abroad and local dinner dances and trips to speedway.

The couple had no children of their own but were regarded a wonderful aunt and uncle and became involved with the Bradford Cinderella Club and Scouts.

When Arthur died in 1993 Marjorie lived independently, enjoying her garden, shopping trips and visits to South Wales.

A fall in late 2016 resulted in a short stay in hospital and then a move to Mill View Care Home, in Bolton Lane, Bradford.
