A SHOW Garden with Yorkshire at its heart has won gold at a national event in London.

The Welcome to Yorkshire exhibition garden was given the highest possible award at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show after attracting VIP guests and celebs alike.

The garden was designed by Yorkshireman, Mark Gregory, and channels the beauty and best features of God’s own County.

From drystone walls, to a fast-flowing stream, as well as an authentic stone cottage at the centre of the garden, the exhibition provided delight for the likes of Alan Titchmarsh, Jeremy Paxman and even the Queen.

She was enchanted by the garden and made some beautiful comments according to Chief Exec of Welcome to Yorkshire, Sir Gary Verity DL

Designer, Mr Gregory, said: “I’m completely blown away and feeling really quite emotional. I knew I’d done my best but a gold medal for Yorkshire in my 30th year here at Chelsea is just a dream come true!”

The award was given just after 7am this morning and Mr Gregory said he managed to hold it together on receiving the certificate but admitted that he may now have a teary moment.

Mr Verity said: “I’m thrilled! The garden is a credit to everyone who’s worked on it and to Yorkshire. Mark Gregory is one of best garden designers in the world and we are incredibly fortunate he is a Yorkshireman who has built this garden with such passion and pride.”

He also wanted to thank the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, the Wensleydale Creamery and all the businesses in the Dales who make it what it is.

The City of Bradford Brass Band were also present, as part of the exhibition, and played tunes such as Jerusalem and On Ilkla Moor Baht ’at.

Welcome to Yorkshire is now looking forward to showcasing all that is good about Yorkshire to thousands more people throughout the week.
