SIR – With state school budgets severely cut throughout the land, the Government has, it seems, just managed to ‘find’ £50 million to hand over for education.

Except, that NONE of this money is going to comprehensives, where the great majority of our children/young people go. For, this cash has been earmarked for the use of the comparatively small number of selective grammar schools.

Education workers and school leaders were more than disappointed that this public funding should be being used in this way.

National Association of Head Teachers, deputy general secretary Nick Brook commented: “The Government cannot point to a single piece of evidence that shows strong educational benefit from this misguided policy. It will not close the gap between rich and poor pupils and if anything will increase the divide. This money should be spent for the benefit of all children.”

Hear, hear!
