POLICE, firefighters and the police helicopter were scrambled to bring a suspected burglar down from the roof of a property.

Officers were called to Ellercroft Terrace, Lidget Green, at just after 1.30am on Sunday.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Officers entered the address and opened a dormer window to engage with the male, who was brought down from the roof at around 3am.

"The male, 20, was arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary and later released under investigation.

"No threats were reported and the male was found to be unarmed."

Videos circulating on social media show the man on the roof holding his arms in the air as a crowd watch on.

Another shows the man being brought down from the roof on a cherry picker surrounded by police officers.

Resident Aqil Mohammad,25, said his friend rang him and told him to close the windows of his attic because there was a burglar on the roof.

He said it wasn't clear which roof the man was on until he started crossing from one to the other.

Mr Mohammad said the man was then spotted and 'planked' on his roof until the police helicopter came out.

He said: "When the light from the chopper shone on the roof it was obvious he was on mine, laid there, but wouldn't respond.

"I allowed a policeman to go up into my room attic to negotiate with him but he wouldnt respond."

He said that after "numerous attempts" the fire brigade were called and police went up in the cherry picker.
