A BINGLEY nightclub which is due to open tonight under a temporary licence has had its windows smashed.

Bijou Nightclub, in Chapel Lane, was closed and had its licence revoked last year following the death of 26-year-old James Etherington in November.

A full review hearing was to take place.

Mr Etherington was assaulted at the premises and died of his injuries ten days later.

Three men aged 23, 30 and 31 were arrested in relation to the incident and released pending investigation.

Earlier this week it was announced a temporary event notice had been submitted for the premises.

A temporary licence – for 9pm tonight until 4.30am tomorrow morning (Sunday) – was lodged with Bradford Council for the venue under the name of 11a.

The event, billed as a ‘Danny T Take Over @ 11a’ has been advertised on social media.

A post on Bingley Town Council's Facebook page said: "For information. In relation to the pending temporary license application for the Bijou nightclub/11a, Bradford Council’s licensing department has advised that legally the only objections they are permitted to consider are those of the police and environmental health and that these objections need to be in today (May 15) by 5pm.

"Licensing have informed the town council that the police have no objections to the current application (in licensing terms, the previous situation has no bearing on the current application).

"The town council has also been advised by licensing that environmental health is unlikely to object, as this would be on noise grounds."

Several people responded to the post stating their anger and saying the premises should remain closed out of respect to Mr Etherington.

A nearby shop trader who did not wish to be named said the damage to the windows had been done before he got to work this morning. He added that a new "Bijou" sign had also been put up.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "Police were called at 12noon today to a commercial premises in Chapel Lane, Bingley, to reports of criminal damage – believed to have happened overnight."
