GRANT McCann is keen on the City job as his way back into management.

The Telegraph & Argus understands that Edin Rahic’s vision for the club and the philosophy of bringing young players through would really appeal to the former Peterborough boss.

Mark Warburton remains the bookies’ favourite as the hunt for a new head coach moves towards another week.

Former Hearts boss Ian Cathro is another name to be mentioned but Steve Cotterill has been ruled out of the running. Gary Megson has also been linked with the job, although there is not thought to have been any contact.

City are refusing to comment on the potential candidates for a role that Rahic and co-owner Stefan Rupp hope will be a long-term tie-up with their own thinking.

Northern Irishman McCann is understood to have shown an interest as he looks to return to the game after three months out.

He was sacked by Posh in February after 22 months in charge, during which time he won 42 of his 105 games. He also turned Jack Marriott into League One’s deadliest striker.

Peterborough finished 11th in his first full year at the helm and were 10th when chairman Darragh MacAnthony reluctantly pulled the plug.

McCann’s side had made a flying start to last season before City inflicted a first defeat with a 3-1 win at the ABAX Stadium.

Posh gained their revenge with a 3-1 Valley Parade victory on Boxing Day but then won only one more of the nine league games that followed before he was sacked.

McCann’s last four games at the helm were all draws and they only lost two of his final 12 in League One. But having shelled out £1.4 million for a promotion push, MacAnthony felt he had to make the call.

MacAnthony admitted that he had “wrestled hard” with the decision to sack him.

He apologised at the time for “letting Grant down” and called him “a club legend, loyal, ambitious, positive-minded, energetic and hard-working”.

The 38-year-old had previously played 185 games for the club in midfield, scoring in a man-of-the-match display in their play-off final win over Huddersfield in 2011. He was also capped 39 times by his country.
