A TOTAL of £43,100 in fines and costs for littering offences was imposed by Bradford magistrates in a single day last month.

A team of private enforcement officers operate in Bradford, issuing £80 Fixed Penalty Notices (FPN) to people who drop litter, spit, or allow their dogs to foul.

Bradford Council said that on April 28, 108 people it had taken to court for none payment were hit with £22,960 in fines, £16,960 in costs, and £3,180 in victim surcharges, equating to nearly £400 per person.

Councillor Sarah Ferriby, the Council’s executive member for environment, sport, and culture, said: “The only result we are looking to achieve is for people to face up to their responsibility and dispose of their rubbish in the proper way. All income received from the FPNs is re-invested in street cleaning so the people who litter are helping to pay for it to be picked up.”
